Private Medical Insurance: Faster Answers When Health Worries Strike
Quicker access to diagnosis and treatment, in a hospital and at a time you choose. It sits alongside the NHS rather than replacing it.
- Individual or family
- Faster diagnosis
- Choose your hospital
- Whole of market
Free, no obligation, and no credit check to get started.
What people actually buy with private medical insurance is time. The wait between suspecting something is wrong and knowing what it is, is the part that wears families down.
It covers acute conditions that respond to treatment. It is not designed for chronic long term conditions or emergencies.
What It Typically Covers
- Consultations with a specialist, usually after a GP referral.
- Diagnostic tests and scans, often the most valuable part.
- Inpatient and day patient treatment, including surgery.
- Cancer care, at varying levels depending on the policy.
- Some mental health support, depending on the plan chosen.
What It Does Not Cover
Pre existing conditions are usually excluded, at least initially. So are chronic conditions such as diabetes or asthma, which need ongoing management rather than a course of treatment. Accident and emergency care is NHS territory and always will be.
Moratorium underwriting excludes anything you have had in recent years, then covers it after a clear period, usually two years. Full medical underwriting asks everything upfront and tells you exactly what is excluded from day one. The second gives certainty, the first is quicker to arrange.
Keeping the Cost Down
- Choose a higher excess, the same principle as car insurance.
- Accept a guided consultant list rather than open choice.
- Restrict the hospital list to local rather than nationwide.
- Add a six week option, where the policy only pays if the NHS wait exceeds six weeks. This can cut the premium substantially.
Family and Employer Cover
Family policies cover partners and children, usually at a modest extra cost per child. If your employer already offers a scheme, check it before buying your own, and check whether you can add family members to it. Group protection covers the employer side.
No paperwork and no credit check. An adviser calls you back with your real options.

Does it replace the NHS?
No. Emergency care, and most chronic condition management, stays with the NHS. Private cover is for acute conditions and speed of access.
Are pre existing conditions covered?
Usually not at outset. Depending on the underwriting type, some may become covered after a period without symptoms or treatment.
Do premiums rise each year?
Generally yes, with age and with medical inflation. Reviewing the policy annually rather than letting it renew automatically is worth doing.
Do I need a GP referral?
Usually yes for a specialist consultation, though some policies now offer direct access or a digital GP service.
